I trained at Bristol University on the Deaf Studies (Interpreting) Diploma of Higher Education course and graduated in 1994. Since then I have been a freelance interpreter working in a variety of domains. I started my career as a community interpreter where I gained experience, knowledge and confidence and I then progressed more into platform, media and performance interpreting as well as working for various police forces. I spent some time at Sky TV as an in-vision interpreter for their live news and sports channels and did some work at GMTV. For my performance work I have worked at a variety of theatres
interpreting a variety of performance styles, from adult to children and static to promenade. In 2000 I became a qualified interpreter gaining MRSLI status with NRCPD.
I have been involved with ASLI for a number of years and conducted their first and second Fees and Salaries surveys. I was the chair of the Legal Working Group for a number of years and represented the profession at various meetings with the London Metropolitan Police and the Interpreter Working Group, which was a national group of representatives of the British legal and judicial field. I am still involved with Kent Police and train their officers on Tier 3 ABE interview training on how to use BSL/English interpreters. I am one of the co-owners of E-Newsli, which is a discussion forum for BSL/English interpreters, Deaf community and other interested parties.
I now work mostly as a community interpreter, enjoying the human contact element of the work. As well as the community work, I interpret for a variety of Deaf professionals in their workplace and enjoy the challenge that this work brings. I also undertake theatre and union work.
When the pandemic hit and we were all forced to work from home I invested time and money to ensure I have an optimum set up and knowledge to enable me to work effectively from home. I now enjoy working large international conferences through to smaller webinars from my home studio.
As well as my interpreting work I qualified as a professional supervisor in 2015. Although I no longer actively supervise interpreters, the skills I learnt on the course are an asset to my interpreting work.
In 2021 I joined the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC) and in 2023 I became the Coordinator for the Sign Language Network (SLN) within that worldwide organisation.
I am based in Kent in the South East of England and work locally for community work, but I will travel nationally for conference work.
As well as requesting me through agencies I can be booked directly. It's easy, just drop me an email with your requirements and I will respond.
